Questions & answers

What families ask us most

Straight answers about eligibility, cost, safety and how the organization is run. If your question isn't here, call us or send a message — we answer every one.

Who can play for Abilene Hope Ballers 4 Life?

Boys and girls in roughly grades 4 through 12 are eligible to try out for our travel rosters, and our Skills Academy is open to players from 3rd grade up regardless of team affiliation. We welcome athletes from across Abilene, Dyess AFB and the surrounding Big Country communities.

When are tryouts held?

Travel-team evaluations are typically held in January and February ahead of the spring AAU season. Because we serve a large military-connected community, we also accept rolling inquiries year-round from families who arrive mid-season, and we will place athletes wherever there is room.

What does it cost, and what if we can't afford it?

Participation costs cover gym time, tournament entry fees, uniforms, insurance and travel. We work hard to keep those costs well below typical travel-basketball pricing, and need-based assistance is available. Contact us and ask — no family is turned away without a conversation first.

Is Abilene Hope Ballers 4 Life a registered nonprofit?

Yes. We are a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity recognized by the IRS under EIN 82-4572190, governed by a volunteer board of directors. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, and our determination letter is available to donors on request.

Are coaches background checked?

Yes. Coaches and regular volunteers complete background screening and abuse-prevention training before working with athletes, consistent with AAU membership requirements. Anyone transporting players must also provide a valid license and proof of insurance.

Where do the teams travel?

Our schedule centers on sanctioned AAU and regional tournaments across Texas — primarily Abilene, Dallas–Fort Worth, Lubbock, San Antonio and Houston — with occasional out-of-state showcase events for high-school athletes.

How are donations used?

Donations go directly to program costs: gym rental, tournament entry and officiating fees, uniforms, team travel, insurance and the need-based assistance fund that keeps participation within reach for every family. Our board treasurer reports on allocation each season.

How can my business support the program?

Local businesses sponsor teams at several levels, from community support through full program partnership. Sponsors receive recognition on team apparel and program materials plus a season-end impact summary. Reach out through our contact form and we will send the current sponsorship packet.
